| What does compulsory registration mean for me? |

Many groups of social service workers are now required to register with the SSSC if they are not already registered with another regulatory body e.g. Nursing and Midwifery Council. Workers who start in a position that requires registration will have six months from their start date in which to register with the SSSC. Employers have a legal responsibility to ensure that all of their staff are appropriately registered. Employers would be committing an offence if they continue to employ an unregistered worker for more than six months after their start date if they are working in a role that requires registration. If an applicant does not currently hold all the required qualifications they can still be granted registration subject to the condition that they achieve the required qualifications within a specified period (normally the first period of registration).
